The guest bedroom is now open for business!

I have a guest bedroom now!  I got to make over my son’s bedroom since he moved into his own apartment. He is a sophomore now and lives close so I still get to see him.  The room was a bit of a disaster, I deep cleaned and shampooed the carpet and touched up the paint and spackled, and well you get the idea!

I’ve always loved the morning sun this room gets…

100_8815

This little desk was mine as a child…built by my grandfather in 1965.  I think all five of us girls got one like this and the boys got a more business like desk.  The original stool is long gone but I found this little vanity stool at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore for $1.  I recovered it with some chevron fabric and it was ready to use. I am still looking for the perfect lamp here.

100_8827

I moved a little bookcase into the corner of the room and added some bright colors in a beachy/ocean theme.

100_8822

The ombre basket that I painted goes well here!

100_8823

So does the dictionary page saying in a thrifted frame…

100_8809

The walls in this room are grey, I didn’t care for it at first, but it goes great with the blue, yellow, cream and red that I used. I bought very little for this room makeover, much of it I had accumulated over time.

100_8808

I did make the headboard for the bed.  And the quilt on the bottom of the bed.

100_8807

And these two quilts which I tucked into a thrift store painted basket.

100_8797

I love this coat rack; I made it from hardware store faucets and actually cost very little.

100_8793

The little red glass lamp came out of my closet and the embroidery hoops were collected and I used scraps to put in them.  I made the dust ruffle from a thrifted fitted mattress pad and some muslin that was 70% off at JoAnns.

100_8795

Mom got me the beach sign for my birthday and you can see how I made the wreath here.

100_8812

You can see the little pine chest here…it is called a “shoe chest” in my family.  Again, my grandfather made it in 1965 and I think all of us had one at one time.  The square pouf I got at Target for $11 (Wal-Mart had them for $20 even)!  It was on clearance and recovering it is on my to do list.

Recycled glass and driftwood mobile

100_8423

Don’t you just love driftwood?  I made this mobile from a great piece of twisty river driftwood, straight out of the Missouri River, and a collection of glass pieces from old broken mobiles.  Three old mobiles to be exact…plus some oval and rectangular chunks of colored glass and a few flat marbles.

100_8244

The mobile was my first official project in my new garage work space.

100_8298

I used fishing line to hang the glass pieces and made double knots to keep the pieces secure.  Then to make sure that the knots didn’t loosen up I used a drop of super glue on each knot.

100_8422

The glass makes a very nice tinkling when the wind blows…

100_8300

The colors are mostly blues, with some clear and some frosted glass…

100_8270

I drilled seven holes in the driftwood and tied knots around the ovalish shapes to keep the knots from pulling back through the wood.

100_8417

The mobile isn’t entirely symmetrical but I like that part of it.  It balances well and hangs nicely.

100_8304

The mobile got two paws up from Baby Kitty…so I guess it’s OK!

Random things…

100_7776

Last September the big hail storm we had destroyed my homemade umbrella, there were multiple holes and tears in it so I drug it up to the sewing room and mended it.  Probably a dozen holes in it and a big three corner tear.  I zig zagged it back together and added two rows of gross grain ribbon to help hold it together another year.

100_7772

I made it from a drop cloth last summer, you can go here to see that post!  I washed it and bleached it after I patched it and it washed very well and is brighter.

100_7707

Several years ago I taught a quilting class at church.  Fred was the only guy at both the classes and he took it all very seriously!  Most of the participants finished theirs slowly, and just a few weeks ago Fred brought his to me to send to my Aunt Marge to be quilted.

100_7710

Marge even commented on what a nice job he had done! Fred made a queen size quilt and a wall hanging from the leftovers!  It needs binding now and he will be done with it!

100_7712

I bought this hernia-inducing concrete birdbath at an auction a few weeks ago.  $10!  I have always wanted one, but wanted one that wouldn’t tip over or be as likely to break.  This one fits the bill perfectly!

100_7713

I’m steadily taking off the mosaic pieces and am planning to do something with flat marbles in shades of blues and greens.  Probably will keep the base white, but thinking about a turquoise color for the bowl part.  Any ideas on how that would look??

100_7716

This container on my deck had all perennials planted last year and they survived and it is a beautiful collection of dianthus, and mums and some ornamental grass and creeping jenny.  Love that it didn’t cost anything!

I can identify, what can I say?  (found this on instagram)

IMG_8296

Love this too!  (also found on instagram, not sure how to credit it there)

IMG_8347

I was in Boonville with my boyfriend this past weekend  (yes, it is so exciting to say I have a boyfriend… for the past 3 months we have been hanging out and it has been a blast!) and we were wandering the downtown area and found this great little shop.

IMG_8348

Tons of neat planters, and all things recycled, upcycled but in a great way!

IMG_8349

Ladders hanging from the ceiling holding all sorts of things, planters made from old metal washpans and dishes, ladders with old enamel dishes attached to each step to plant with flowers.  I asked the lady if I could take some pictures and she said yes, but then I saw a sign saying, no pictures! I put the phone away and stopped but this place is jammed with great things and reasonably priced too!  Stop by if you are ever there in Boonville, she makes all the furniture herself from upcycled wood.

Another Bandanna Quilt

100_7683

Love the colors in this bandanna quilt. I have made several of these before, the first one was 25+ years ago and we carried it everywhere, to the state fair, to picnics, fireworks.

100_7687

This is a gift for someone special.

100_7685

Milo has to get in on all the action too!  I spread the quilt out nicely and here he came.

100_7690

The bright blue and the chocolate brown look great together.

100_7691

I backed it with a bright blue gingham (from Goodwill $1) and a row of left over bandanas.

100_7693

Aunt Marge quilted it for me and did a great job…

100_7686

I bound it with a chocolate polka dot fabric which looks so cute!

100_7698

Love the quilting design too!!

Columbia has a Super Target now!

Columbia, Mo now has a Super Target!  I hadn’t been to Target in a while, but have had the opportunity to mosey around the store lately and there are lots of things that I am loving!

IMG_7720

Love these faux coral pieces…

IMG_7722

And the specimen art seashell picture. Think I might just have to make myself one of those!  With burlap as the background!

IMG_7723

And this cute blue table with the darker blue color dipped legs…

IMG_7724

And this shower curtain is something I almost bought at the clearance price of $12.48.  I loved the muslin look to it, but didn’t really need one, so I was good and passed it by, after drooling a bit.  Well, last week I was in Goodwill and found the exact same shower curtain, fresh out of the package and it was $4.00!!  I grabbed that sucker and ran with it to the cashier…she told me that Target sends a lot of overstocks and left over clearance things to them.  I will be keeping a close eye on that from now on!

IMG_6185

And speaking of specimen art, this butterfly shadow box is really cool.

IMG_6184

Oh, the frost glass vases in THAT shade of blue.

IMG_6180

I found myself drawn to the orange lamps and stools/tables too…

IMG_6182

And of course more blue…

IMG_6183

Lots of different textures and colors too.

IMG_6186

The cutest bird top cloche with a wooden base…

IMG_6187

I cruise through Target routinely if I want to catch something I like on the lowest clearance price.  The guide from the KrazyCouponLady.com has helped me figure out the schedule for clearance prices.  Every store may not follow that strictly, but it is a guideline so if you are trying to catch something just after it has been marked down you can.
