Dictionary Page Note Cards

The peacock is my favorite. I dropped little drops of glue with a fine applicator onto each feather eye (hard to see here) and then sprinkled different colored glitter!  Love me some glitter!

Aren’t these cards great?  I bought a 50 pack of plain cards at Michael’s ($4 with my 50% off coupon), used my stash of dictionaries (I have several, but haven’t paid more than $1 for any of them) and some adhesive to make these cards. 

I used Google Image search to look for various fun drawings to print on the pages.  So, tape a dictionary page to a printer size paper.  Find an image you want on your dictionary page and copy it, then paste into a word document (his is how I do it, may not be the easiest way).  Adjust the size to fit the size of the cards you have and then center the image on the document so it will be in the center of your dictionary page.

Then just print…I just taped the top of the dictionary page to the paper so it is easier to remove.  All the pages printed just fine that way.

These are really striking as cards.  You could also make a paper to be be Mod Podged onto canvas, or just frame a full size print.  Another cute idea would be to print on sheet music.

Randomness

Aren’t these owl zip cases so cute?  Sarah sent them in this month’s “present box”. Love them, I had seen some others she had made and admired them avidly…perhaps that is where she got the idea that I wanted some like this!

Today is my son’s 18th birthday!  I can’t believe he is now officially an adult!  He is planning to go to Mizzou to school this fall…I am so proud of him.  Boy they sure do grow up fast!  Just yesterday he was a baby…and in a few months he will be graduating from high school!

This is my first and only attempt at upholstering…I am getting rid of this chair and I am totally done with it!  Definitely a FAIL!!!  Things just didn’t go very well and truthfully I don’t even like the chair anymore!

I am so pleased with how many hits my blog is getting these days…seems to be Pinterest related, although I am not entirely sure.  Let’s get a close-up of those numbers!  Yesterday was a record number of daily pageviews, today beat that number by 500+ more!  I am OK with that!  (Screenshots taken on my new iPhone 4—it really does so much more than old iPhone 3!)

Tomorrow morning I get my stitches taken out from my shoulder surgery…they have been there for 11 days and are driving me crazy!  I had surgery because I had 3 tears in my rotator cuff, but the good news was that they didn’t have to do the big surgery to repair it, just some smaller cleaning up of scar tissue, so recovery time is limited!  So tomorrow I get to go back to work!  Yay, that’s great because I do love my job!

Just one more tidbit…in addition to a new phone, last week I got new glasses!  The old ones were five years old at least and oh yeah, I couldn’t see out of them!!  So here are a very bad few pics of my new glasses…I got two pair since the second pair was only $60 more…good to have a spare pair in case a pair breaks!  I love them both, they are both retro looking…

Pinterest-inspired Toffee

My take on the cracker toffee bars

I layered butterscotch chips and milk chocolate chips onto a bottom layer of Club Crackers, then covered it all with caramel sauce.  I repeated the process with another layer of crackers, chips, and caramel, then topped it with chocolate chips.  I popped it in the oven at 350 for about 10 minutes until the caramel bubbled and the chocolate chips on top melted. 

I must say it is pretty tasty!  Now I am off to clean the oven—the caramel bubbled over in the bottom of the oven!  Lovely!

A heart necklace…

My sis Sarah and I exchange a little gift every other month, at the beginning of the even months.  So it is time here for the February gift and this gift I just didn’t want to part with!

I started with some sheet music, a few pages from an old dictionary, an old map, some scrapbooking paper, Mod Podge, small flat shell beads and a few bigger ones, some necklace jewelry chain, a few jump rings and a heart punch (about an inch in diameter), oh yeah, and an idea!

First I cut out the hearts…I used the “heart” page in the dictionary, some cute song lyrics (the farmer takes a wife, the wife takes…etc), and maps from everywhere Sarah has lived. 

I Mod Podged (is that a word?) the hearts to the scrapbook paper (cardstock) and just kept applying layers of Mod Podge until the hearts were quite stiff, I covered both sides of the cardstock.  Let them dry completely and then punch a tiny hole in the top of each heart. 

Attach a jump ring to each bead and each heart and place them on the chain, arranging them as you wish!  Mine are arranged imperfectly, no measuring.  I made my necklace long enough that I didn’t put a clasp on it, but you could if you wanted or if you made the necklace shorter.

I wish I could see her open it!

Well, I didn’t get to see Sarah open the necklace, but I did enjoy getting a few texts from her!  She was talking about the necklace! 

Now I believe I am going to have to make one for myself!

Saturday’s thrifty finds

I scored some great finds Saturday!  I may not be able to go thrift shopping for a while so thought I would take advantage of a uncommitted morning!  I am having surgery on my shoulder, of course on my right shoulder, so will not be able to use my right arm for a bit.

I bought four white dessert plates to use underneath glass cloches, 25 cents each.  That throw on the back of the chair is a Thomas O’Brien throw from Target, it’s Mohair and acrylic, very soft and snuggly, in perfect shape and $2!  I also bought this little handled cloche (that’s what I am calling it!) for $1. 

This all mohair scarf was another great find for $2…I will use it for the mohair yarn when I make felted wool birds nests.  The navy scarf behind the mohair one is cashmere and I will probably felt it…cost $1.

Then there’s this great vintage fabric, bright blues, greens and yellow, kind of a coarse fabric that has great potential and it was only $3 and there are about 5 yards of it!   Love it!

These Styrofoam wreath forms were only 25 cents each.  I almost bought a few of them a few weeks ago, but decided against that because they were $3 each! 

A cloche on a new thrifted plate!  I bought the cloche at an auction a few weeks ago for $4 (I think!). 

This throw looks great on the chair…the chair I found at a thrift store as well for $20.  And the pink pillow was a $1 find at another thrift store!

Ruffle Yarn Infatuation

I discovered ruffle yarn or ladder yarn (that’s what I have heard it called).  Well, maybe I didn’t actually discover it, but I have discovered that I love to use it. There are a lots of different kinds out there…like this…

Ok, so I found some ruffle yarn at Hobby Lobby (and it goes without saying that I used my 40% off coupon) for $4 and knitted my first scarf in an evening watching TV. Here’s what it looks like…

This is the yarn label…if you notice there are nice directions that show you how to use the yarn.  Of course when I started my knitting, I didn’t see those directions and ended up looking up the “how to” on YouTube. 

Since making that first scarf, I have made three more.  One beautiful rose and pale green scarf for my mom for Christmas and two more for me.  This red ombre is a fun color. 

But this one is my favorite…it reminds me of peacock feathers. 

This yarn was $14 at a local yarn shop.  Such beautiful colors!

The interesting thing about this yarn is that you use the loops of the yarn to cast on and knit with.
