How to remove spray paint from your hands~~the easy way!

You’re probably thinking I’m crazy for a post with this title. Maybe I am, but I have been taking spray paint off my hands this way for years…before this I used a paint remover or nail polish (which was very irritating to my hands).  If I had cuts or a torn cuticle it was painful too.  And as a nurse, my hands were always stressed anyway since I washed them so much.

So, I am a big spray painter (love this color BTW, Krylon’s Satin Caramel Latte) and when I painted these metal acorns for the bottle project, I decided to share my paint removal tip. I always forget the gloves and I am known to be a messy crafter, so I am always getting spray paint all over me.

All you need is a heavy lotion or cream and a few paper towels or a clean rag.  This Bath and Body Works hand cream is perfect, but almost any kind will work…baby lotion works great too.

Put a generous glob of lotion in your palm, admire how much paint you have around your nails.  Rub the lotion in all over your hands, leave it on for a minute or two, then wipe it off with the paper towel.

Now, this is what you have after one application…now just lather, rinse and repeat apply another generous squirt of lotion and rub it in, let it sit and wipe it off!

You can see the paint on the paper towel…it’s coming off!

This is what my hand looked like after the second lotion application.

I applied one more glob of lotion and repeated the process.

Ta da!!  That’s all there is to it!  Easy, non-harsh chemical paint removal.  All that’s left is a tad around a few nails, but that came right off with a brush.  Now if only I could find a way to remove those wrinkles and age spots!

Next time I use spray paint (and it always gets on my hands/fingers) I will try this first, 3 times, way less irritating and harsh than scrubbing with googone.

And here I thought I was the only crafter with fingers that looked like that. I don't like to use gloves because once you get paint on them, they get sticky and create new problems from there.

Gee, now I HAVE to get some more lotion from B&BW! I really hate having to think of excuses to go there. ;)

Thanks for this tip; I have another, similar one to share: coconut oil! Coconut Oil is all the rage in natural foods cooking and personal care products. I learned this when a a friend of mine, who had me paint her rental property's outdoor porch with seafoam green *YACHT* paint (very durable, oil-based) had me clean up with this after first using turpentine for the initial layer of cleaning. This same friend was the one who had turned me on to coconut oil, which she had learned about after bumming in the Carribean on a very small sailboat with 8 others for 4 months-it served as conditioner, lotion, cleaner, and cooking oil: things needed to be multi-function! Give it a try sometime; I bought mine at a natural foods store, and have seen it at Trader Joe's too.
